The story of the medieval community based around Winchester's Jewry Street is being told in a city trail leaflet launched by the local city council and university.

More than 70 people attended the opening event at Guildhall Winchester at which they sampled the tour in the company of official Winchester guides.

The trail stems from the lobbying of a local action group fronted by businessman Danny Habel.

A team of researchers at the university led by Dr Christina Welch, senior lecturer in medieval history, focused on the early Middle Ages when Winchester was a national cultural centre. A number of royal births and marriages took place within the city walls and the royal family had strong links to the Jewish population. Community members had to pay heavy fines, were imprisoned and even executed before its expulsion at the end of the 13th century.
