The drinks are on Lubavitch of Scotland, which has opened a new kosher wine shop and café at its Giffnock, Glasgow, premises.
Rabbi Chaim Jacobs — who runs the group along with wife Sora — said the move was a means “to help enhance Jewish observance. Seven years ago, there was no kosher eaterie in the community and we started a kosher restaurant.
“Now we’ve noticed that there is no facility to buy kosher wine, so we’ve started this service.”
Rabbi Jacobs was undeterred by the recent closure of the local Hello Deli, which was run by his son, Rabbi Mendel Jacobs, who has returned to work with Lubavitch.
“Kosher food facilities make up the fabric of a Jewish community. In larger cities this may be purely a business venture but in small communities such as Glasgow, it is a vital community service, which must be supported.”
The shop will stock a selection of more than 20 wines. Rabbi Jacobs also hopes to offer a delivery service and says a wine tasting is planned for next month.
