Three Leeds Orthodox synagogues and one in Harrogate will be promoting a Yom Kippur appeal for Leeds Jewish Welfare Board focusing on social isolation.

In a world where many were under stress, "we don't know what could eventually push us over the edge", said Jonathan Straight, the board's chair of income generation.

LJWB was "listening to the community to ascertain what it needs and consequently delivering a more tailored service to fill the gaps.

"The issue can hit any age, any demographic. Our strategy is intended to help people before they reach crisis point." Although the charity was "eternally grateful for the tremendous support we receive, there are a lot of people who don't help us who can. People have to begin to look outwards. Without the community behind us, we have significant problems."
