Some of the best known names in Anglo-Jewry were represented at Weizmann UK's gala dinner, celebrating long-term British support for Israeli scientific advancement.
Representatives of the Sieff, Clore Duffield, Rothschild and Wolfson families were among 300 guests at the event, held at the Science Museum in Kensington, which raised over £1.1 million.
They featured in a video tribute to key supporters of the establishment of the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in 1934, which became the Weizmann Institute in 1949. The film also focused on pioneering scientific discoveries made at the Weizmann which have benefited multiple sclerosis and colon cancer sufferers, helped to feed the hungry and facilitated secure online banking.
Professor Eran Segal travelled from the institute to talk about recent results in his pioneering personal nutrition project.
"If successful, our study may allow us to move from empirically based to personally based nutrition and thus to personally tailored medicine," he explained.
Also addressing the dinner, British Ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould praised the Weizmann as "truly one of the world's leading scientific research Institutes.
"Weizmann UK and its network of supporters can be deeply proud of contributing to the Weizmann Institute's success, to UK-Israel scientific partnership and world-class research that will benefit humanity."
Paying tribute to supporters, Weizmann UK chairman Martin Paisner said: "To have raised £1.1 million is a fitting achievement to mark the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Daniel Sieff Research Institute."
