UK appeal for Ukrainian Jews raises £2 million in 48 hours

Money is going to orphanage and schools and for the distribution of essential supplies

Around £2 million has been raised for Ukraine Jewish charities in 48 hours from two appeals run through the crowdfunding platform Charity Extra.

More than £1.1 million has been donated for the emergency appeal of Tikva, the orphanage and schools, which has relocated from Odessa to a safer location in Western Ukraine.

And some $1.15 million (£860,000) has been donated to the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine towards the distribution of 30,000 packages of essential supplies across 180 communities.

Both campaigns have smashed their original targets with the majority of donations coming from the UK.

Charity Extra founder Yitzi Bude said: “The world has been gripped by the tragic events taking place in Ukraine.

“The harrowing footage and images coming out of the country show just how much the Ukrainian people need our help.

“It was a no-brainer for us to help in the best way we could and we have been overwhelmed by the incredible reaction from the public.

“It is deplorable that such events can still take place in the 21st century. We must do all we can to help.”
