Two singers have teamed up to put on a Jewish-themed show to “celebrate this wonderful culture that brings us so much joy” and to raise funds for Jewish Women’s Aid.
Tanya Truman and Brady Isaacs Pearce will star in A Night of Jewish Joy on Monday, which they are also producing.
The evening will showcase Jewish singers, including West End actors and new talent from Immanuel College, performing songs by Jewish artists and composers, ranging from Amy Winehouse to Barbra Streisand.
Truman said: “We just wanted to focus on a night which is a celebration of being Jewish. Obviously, it’s a very dark, heavy and conflicting time for a lot of Jews, so it feels important right now to celebrate our amazing culture and all of these incredible songs written by Jewish artists.”
In addition to Back to Black by Winehouse, My Man by Streisand and Someone to Watch Over Me by George Gershwin, there will be a rendition of a song by the American singer-songwriter Regina Spektor. “Everyone knew that Regina Spektor was Jewish, but she started really speaking up about her Jewish identity after October 7,” said Truman.
She added: “While being Jewish comes with its challenges, when we're having to have difficult conversations with people, we should be proud to be who we are and to celebrate this wonderful culture that brings us so much joy.
"When social media can be really challenging, we just wanted everyone, for one night, to come and switch off from all of that and enjoy a really lively, fun, joyful night.”
Truman previously produced Pickle at the Soho Theatre, an upbeat one-woman comedy show by award-winning Deli Segal about being Jewish and secular in the UK today.
The idea for Monday’s show came to Truman and Isaacs Pearce a few weeks ago, and the London venue gave them the night for free as it is a charity event.
“We just wanted to have a night to express ourselves and to perform and sing, where it's just filled with supportive people that want to celebrate being Jewish,” said Truman.
“Jewish Women's Aid is a charity we really wanted to support because they’re doing wonderful things and it’s very close to all of our hearts as Jewish women taking part in the night.”
Jewish Women’s Aid supports women and children affected by domestic and/or sexual violence.
