The JC is asking readers to support refugees through its Mitzvah Day project, being run in collaboration with the Gift charity’s shoe recycling scheme, Step Up.

This was launched by barmitzvah boy Noah Rubin on Mitzvah Day 2013 and involves the collection of barely worn shoes which are cleaned and sorted by volunteers and sent to recipients at home and abroad. Almost 3,000 pairs have been distributed to refugees, asylum seekers, London homeless shelters and Jews in need.

Readers can donate footwear on Sunday, November 8, from 10am-2pm at Gift’s north London warehouse, 61-63 Watford Way (corner of Rundell Crescent), Hendon NW4 3LP. Those in Manchester can drop off shoes on Monday-Thursday, from 10am-noon, at Prestwich Hebrew Congregation, Bury New Road M25 9WN. Ring 0208 457 4429 (London) or 0161 798 1360 (Manchester) for further details.
