Sturgeon supporting HET's lesson

articlemain

The Scottish Government has announced renewed £280,000 funding for the Holocaust Educational Trust's Lessons from Auschwitz project for students.

It will support the continuation of a programme enabling post-16 pupils from every Scottish school and college to join a one-day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, attend seminars and hear testimony from survivors.

The grant for the 2016/17 academic year was confirmed by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon when she signed the HET's Book of Commitment for Holocaust Memorial Day.

Praising the project for "raising awareness among the wider public", she added that by "reflecting on the horrors of the Holocaust, the trust plays an important part in spurring us on to create a better future and a society where people respect each other, no matter what their differences".

She met HET young ambassadors including Brandon Low, who said: "Lessons from Auschwitz is a brilliant way of learning the history of the Holocaust, bringing what would usually be a normal lesson at school out of the pages of history and into reality. It is a life lesson that every young person in Scotland should have the opportunity to experience. As an ambassador for the trust, I am absolutely dedicated to keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive in Scotland."

Around 360 Scottish sixth-formers take part in the project annually.
