John Bercow recalled his first trip to Israel to an audience of supporters of world aid charity Tzedek at the Speaker’s House on Monday.

Hosting the 70 guests at Tzedek’s first young professionals’ event, Mr Bercow said the Israel visit with his father had been a barmitzvah present. He also discussed other aspects of his Jewish background.

Praising the work of Tzedek and its commitment to alleviating poverty, the Speaker stressed his ongoing interest in international development. Responding to a question about the Enough Food for Everyone campaign, of which Tzedek is part, Mr Bercow said: “People don’t live on a dollar a day, they exist on a dollar a day”. It was the government’s duty to be involved in global issues such as poverty.

Echoing the sentiments, ex-chair and long-time Tzedek adviser Clive Lawton said: “We learn how to care at home. We start with those we love and cherish. From there we must strive to care further afield and around the world.”
Mr Bercow has offered to host another Tzedek event.
