In what has been dubbed the “Kosher Ceilidh”, Israeli cultural outreach organisation Soul Train has completed an 11-stop tour of Scotland, bringing music, dancing and stories to communities as far-flung as Ayrshire, Isle of Skye and Lochgilphead.

The two musicians, David Weinreb and Danny Dor-El, also entertained students in St Andrews as well as stopping off at the Calderwood Lodge Primary in Glasgow and the Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation cheder.

Soul Train reached over 350 people and the tour was supported by Scojec, the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities. Scojec’s Ephraim Borowski said its impact was illustrated by a performance for an audience of 25 in Portree on the Isle of Skye.

“The small group of Jews on Skye didn’t know of each other’s existence. But by the time we left they were talking about a communal Seder. Organising the tour took a huge amount of work, but it was very rewarding to see people who have never before expressed their Jewishness in a tangible way make the connection and begin to participate.”

Mr Dor-El, Soul Train’s singer, drummer and story teller, was impressed by the warmth of the welcome shown to them. “They were proud of their culture and hungry for Jewish music. We come from the Jewish centre of energy and they want that energy.”
