Scottish MSP Stewart Maxwell has led the tributes to prominent Holocaust survivor Reverend Ernest Levy, who has died at the age of 84.
Mr Levy survived Auschwitz and Belsen. Moving to Scotland in 1961, he was cantor of the Giffnock and Newlands Synagogue. He also wrote movingly about his Shoah experiences.
The MSP recalled him as “remarkable and inspiring. He will be remembered for his educational work but also as a man of great faith and decency.”
Rabbi Jeremy Rosen, the Giffnock and Newlands minister from 1968-71, said Mr Levy’s “knowledge of liturgy and love of melody endeared him to scholar and layman alike. He and his late wife Kathy were a beloved fixture of Glasgow Jewish life for many years.”
