Barnet Synagogue members who do not normally observe Shabbat accepted Rabbi Barry Lerer's "ultimate challenge" to keep the day according to halachah.

Those who signed up were given a hotplate and urn (allowing them to have warm food and hot water prepared before Shabbat) as well as Shabbat belts to hold their keys.

Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich, the 100th member to sign up for the challenge, said: "This was a beautiful Shabbat from beginning to end. I experienced a real sense of community."

Another member observed: "Never mind 'next year in Jerusalem'. With us it is 'next year Barnet Shabbat UK two'."
