Scotland’s sole bakery under kashrut supervision closed suddenly in Glasgow last week.
The Star Bakery supplied kosher bread to Calderwood Lodge Jewish Primary, two delicatessens, a catering company and Glasgow charitable organisations. No one from the bakery was available for comment.
Glasgow and West of Scotland Kashrut Commission chair Malcolm Livingstone said he was alerted to the closure last Thursday, but “could get no reply from the bakery owners”. The community would have to rely on outside providers, although mainstream brands such as Kingsmill were kosher approved.
Mark Cohen of Mark’s Deli told the JC: “I organised a special delivery from Manchester in order not to disappoint my weekend customers.”
