The Board of Deputies has warned that the date of one of the papers for A-level economics next summer is the second day of Shavuot.
A number of GCSE and A-level exams have been rescheduled from June 6 to avoid coinciding with the festival.
But to move the economics paper would “apparently have created an unacceptable number of timetable clashes”, Board director of public affairs Phil Rosenberg told school leaders this week.
Provided schools make suitable supervision arrangements, Jewish students will be able to sit the paper on an alternative day.
The Joint Council for Qualifications has confirmed that supervision at home would be acceptable, subject to a parent or guardian and the student “signing a declaration and adhering to a set of rules”, Mr Rosenberg advised.
“We know that economics is a popular subject in some Jewish schools and so we wanted to write around to make sure that schools were mindful of this and were able to make appropriate supervisory arrangements.”
