School must do better

articlemain

A strictly Orthodox boys' secondary school in Manchester has been told it must make improvements to meet independent school standards.

Arrangements for the welfare, health and safety of the 62 boys at the Mechinoh School were not good enough, Ofsted said. Inspectors found no hot water for washing for students and inadequate fire precautions.

The national curriculum was broadly followed in English and maths and students were effectively prepared for going on to yeshivah.

Mechinoh's syllabus promoted tolerance and acceptance of other cultures, as well as fundamental British values such as democracy and the rule of law.

But while some of the boys made rapid progress, this was "not consistent", inspectors reported.
