Sussex Police has published a photograph of a man it is seeking in connection with its enquiries into the destruction of the October 7 memorial in central Brighton last month.
In an appeal published today, the force confirmed that it was treating the incident – which took place on May 14 at around 3.30pm – as a hate crime, and was looking for anyone who recognised the man shown in the photograph or for witnesses in the area to come forward.
“A man with long brown hair, believed to be in his 30s and wearing a grey T-shirt, grey trousers and sunglasses, was seen to leave the area via Western Road.
“Officers attended and completed a search of the area but the man was not located.
“Now, officers investigating have released an image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with their enquiries.
“Anyone who recognises the man, or witnesses or anyone with CCTV, mobile phone, or dashcam footage in the area at the time are asked to report it to us, quoting serial 1036 of 14/05.”
The memorial, which has since been rebuilt, is maintained by the city’s Jewish community and dedicated to the victims of October 7, when Hamas terrorists murdered some 1,200 people in southern Israel and abduct about 250 more into the Gaza Strip. Among the victims, 18 British citizens were killed on the day.

In less than a day after last month’s attack on the memorial, some £1,600 was raised by the local Jewish community and its allies to maintain the site and go towards creating a future permanent memorial in the city.
After the memorial’s destruction, pages of a book which featured the photographs of many of the victims of October 7 had been ripped out “so forcefully it bent the rings of the folder,” Heidi Bachram, one of the individuals behind the memorial’s creation, said. “They threw the images of murdered children around like they were nothing. Evil unhinged.”
