Paralympic torch bearer

articlemain

A woman with a rare tissue condition is to carry the Paralympics torch during the official relay on Tuesday.

Lara Bloom is one of 620 torchbearers who are ferrying the torch from Stoke Mandeville in Aylesbury to the Olympic Park for next week’s Games opening.

The 31-year-old Bushey resident has Ehlers-Danlos, a connective tissue disorder. Last year she became the first person with the condition to complete the London Marathon, walking the 26 miles in eight hours 18 minutes, despite breaking her foot halfway through. Her efforts raised more than £10,000 for EDS UK.

Ms Bloom was nominated by Games sponsor Sainsbury’s. “I am so excited,” she said. “I’m really honoured to be taking part in a momentous occasion and can’t wait.”
