A new chaplaincy couple has been appointed for the northern region, despite fears over funding for the post.

Essex-born Garry and Suzanne Wayland will take up the post in September. Both have first class honours degrees and experience of Jewish youth work.

Speaking of his appointment, Rabbi Wayland, 27, who is concluding his rabbinic studies in Jerusalem, said: “We are looking forward to working with the students and also the wider communities. The student community is vibrant and it’s an age group we feel connected to as recent graduates.”

A panel comprising student leaders and members of Jewish Chaplaincy made the appointment, following extensive interviews. The couple will support Jewish student life and represent Jewish students to the university authorities.

The Waylands, who are currently living in Jerusalem, have a two-year-old son, Natanel. The family will be based in Giffnock, Glasgow but are expected to spend two Shabbatot out of four in other communities. The post’s geographical remit includes Scotland and Newcastle upon Tyne.
Hayden Krasner, northern region Jewish student committee president, said: “The couple are very enthusiastic and got on with all the students regardless of their levels of observance.”

Nicola Livingston, chair of Northern Region Chaplaincy, said it had been a struggle to secure the funding for the post.

“A lot of hard work went into finding the funding but thankfully some supporters came forward to bridge the gap,” she explained.
