New national survey on British Jewry launched by JPR

Topics on questionnaire include attachment to Israel and involvement in community

A new in-depth survey of British Jews has been launched by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research, which will glean data on a wide range of issues including community engagement, charitable giving, formative Jewish experiences and attachment to Israel.

During the pandemic, the institute has built up a research panel of around 5,000 people and is inviting other members of the community to join.

JPR director Jonathan Boyd said, “It is important that as many Jews as possible share their views, irrespective of how involved they are in Jewish communal life.”

The data from this study, he said, “would be used to help answer key communal questions, such as what forms of Jewish education have the greatest impact, how Jewish representative bodies should best reflect the views of the community they serve, and how the pandemic affected our Jewish lives.”

The results will supplement information on the British Jewish population that will become available from last year’s national Census.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Jewish Leadership Council Keith Black have voiced support for the exercise in an accompanying video.

This will be the third such survey produced by JPR following in-depth investigations in 1996 and 2013.

More recently, it has published a series of reports looking at the impact of the pandemic on British Jews.
