Former Hertsmere Mayor Stuart Nagler is the new chair of Hertfordshire Police Authority.

The Radlett United Synagogue congregant has been a police authority member for the past five years and the chairmanship gives him overall responsibility for policing services to the county's one million residents, including a growing Jewish population.

"This is a high profile and prestigious position," Mr Nagler told the JC, "and I am honoured to have been appointed to lead the authority through the challenging times ahead.

"Hertfordshire remains one of the safest counties in the country, but we are all concerned about the additional pressures which may be imposed by the current economic and financial meltdown and what it might do to to levels of crimes such as property theft.
