The Reform movement has new leadership after electing Robert Weiner unopposed as its chairman.

Mr Weiner — a recent chair of one of the movement’s largest synagogues, Alyth (North-Western Reform) in Golders Green — succeeds Jenny Pizer. Gary Copitch of Manchester’s Menorah Synagogue replaces David Tilles as vice-chairman. Wimbledon Synagogue’s Rabbi Sybil Sheridan last month became chair of the Assembly of Reform Rabbis UK after Rabbi Mark Goldsmith completed his term of office.

Mr Weiner is in his mid-50s and is a business consultant specialising in support for schools. “Having enjoyed my voluntary work in Alyth, I thought if I could do some good for the wider Reform communities and for the Jewish and wider world, it would be a privilege and an honour,” he said. Anticipating a two-year term of office, he will oversee the continuing delivery of the movement’s strategic plan, agreed in 2012.

Ms Pizer had planned a one-year term but extended it to 18 months after the movement decided to axe the post of chief executive. Mr Weiner anticipated “business as usual. It’s a smooth transition. We’ve got a very good team, both professional and lay, and I am sure that they will continue to deliver to the best of their abilities.”
