Another regional community is exploring the possibility of joining the United Synagogue.
Talks have been ongoing between Childwall Hebrew Congregation in Liverpool and US officials over the past few months.
Sheffield was the first northern congregation to become a member of the US two years ago and Nottingham has been toying with a similar move.
Childwall president Denis Salamon said the congregation, which has around 400 members, was considering the "pros and cons" of a US tie-up.
"We have a building designed to hold in excess of 600 people, which is unsuitable for our current size," he explained.
"It is not just a question of keeping the building open but also the ancillary services which the US can provide."
US community services director David Kaplan has been "encouraged by the extremely constructive early-stage discussions we are having with Childwall.
"While at this stage nothing has been agreed, we look forward to continuing this positive dialogue," he said.
