Moved by the plight of Syrian refugees, 10-year-old Maya Wiseman enlisted fellow pupils at Finchley's Martin Primary School to record a charity CD, which has already raised almost £5,000.
"I hate the thought of innocent people living in violent circumstances," said Maya, whose family are Finchley Reform Synagogue members. "It makes me feel bad because I have a perfect life, whereas they have to suffer." With the school singing club, she recorded a song, I'll Be Your Refuge, and then encouraged other pupils to make a donation to add their own songs. Maya will also be gifting her next birthday presents to Syrian refugee children through War Child.
"I am quite proud but I think we could still raise so much more," she said.
Her parents, Ian Shapiro and Katie Wiseman, have been taken aback by her determination.
"She independently came up with a plan, got a group of kids together and proposed it to her primary school teachers," Mr Shapiro said. "It snowballed from there.
"Her school is a diverse London comprehensive including refugees, asylum seekers and Syrians. They have been brilliant at supporting the initiative."
