New North London Synagogue in Finchley is advertising for a youth and music director, despite having a preferred American-based candidate.
In a letter to members of the Masorti congregation, joint chairs Basil Shall and Sarah Manson reported a positive feedback to a visit from chazan Jeremy Burko, who is originally from Canada.
"The response to Jeremy was particularly enthusiastic for his interaction with the youth," they wrote. Informal discussions had been held with him about the role. However, as Mr Burko is not a UK citizen, "we are required by law to advertise locally for two consecutive weeks before we can make a formal offer.
"Naturally, we will give proper consideration to any serious candidate before deciding whether to make a formal offer to Jeremy."
The role will include building youth engagement, helping the pastoral care group and giving occasional divrei Torah.
