Manchester finds fresh Hub for youth activity

articlemain

South Manchester's Jewish youth club has been forced to relocate after its premises were put up for sale, but organisers say the new location will be an improvement.

After opening in leased former snooker club premises in Altrincham 18 months ago, The Hub today attracts more than 100 youngsters aged from nine-to-18. Activities range from street dance to martial arts and cookery.

Some £120,000 was raised to equip the Altrincham property with computer suites and furnishings and to pay for youth workers.

Now the club is set to move into a new home two miles away in Hale Barns. The former office block requires a £15,000 refurbishment, but much of the equipment and furniture will be transferred.

Although the new premises are half the size, management committee member Kate Moryoussef said the venue was "better suited structurally. We will be putting up some new walls and upgrading toilets, but that's all.

"It was always known we had a short-term lease on our previous premises to see if the appeal was there - and it was. In Hale Barns, kids will be able to get off the school bus and make their way straight to The Hub after school."

It is also welcoming two new youth workers, Liverpudlian Gemma Cailler and law student Daniel Linton.
