An Edgware Synagogue member ran for his life as a 20-tonne tree crashed into his Borehamwood flat, destroying wedding gifts stored in the loft.

Daniel Raphael, 28, saw the tree starting to fall as he went to his car. He was hit by branches but managed to take shelter. "It's amazing no one was hurt. The whole block caved in." The Farm Close flats may have to be demolished.

Mr Raphael has been badly affected by the experience. "I haven't been sleeping, I've lost my appetite. I keep replaying it in my mind. We were only allowed to take as much stuff as we could carry from the flat, so we rescued our wedding photographs."

Mr Raphael's wife, Laura, 27, was out shopping when the tree hit the flats. They are staying with her parents.
