Mitzvah Day is looking to increase its regional programme with the appointment of science student Aviva Khan as its first Manchester-based fieldworker.
Ms Khan, 22, has long been involved in charitable and social action projects - and organisations including Bnei Akiva, Gift and Manchester's leading welfare charity, The Fed. For Mitzvah Day, which this year is on November 22, she will be the main point of contact for synagogues, schools, youth movements and other communities planning events throughout the region.
"What really drew me to Mitzvah Day was the fact that it encourages people to think beyond themselves and their own needs," she said.
"I also love it that everyone of all ages, faiths and backgrounds can get involved - and that Mitzvah Day's founding principle is that volunteers should give their time, rather than their money."
