Merseyside Jewish Community Care is to lose a £20,000 local authority grant towards its provision of kosher meals to the frail and sick.
Liverpool City Council has supported the Kosher Meals and Activities Service for more than 20 years. It provides 7,000 kosher meals annually to elderly people with poor health or low income and those with mental and physical disabilities.
But a change in the grant criteria has removed support for charities with more than 12 months' running costs in unrestricted reserves, making MJCC no longer eligible.
Disappointed chief executive Lisa Dolan said the service would continue, "but there may have to be some changes as a direct consequence". In a statement, the charity added that its prudent planning had enabled it to survive "when several other Jewish charities in Liverpool have sadly closed their doors.
"MJCC's aim is to provide services now and secure the future, but the removal of the meals-on-wheels grant will make this more difficult."
A council representative said the change in criteria had been made "to target our funding where it is needed most".
