Merseyside Jewish Community Care is to open a £350,000 centre for people with learning difficulties.
MJCC delegates were informed on Tuesday that the charity is to work in partnership with the Manchester-based Langdon community to offer a support service for young Jewish adults with learning disabilities.
Addressing MJCC’s annual meeting at Rex Cohen Court, outgoing president Graham Rubin said: “We have identified a need for a Jewish supported living service here in Liverpool, which will enable people with learning difficulties to live independently. Currently they have to move to Manchester to access this service.”
He announced that the project, due to open early next year, will be financed by MJCC and supported by the Liverpool Jewish Housing Association.
Chief executive Lisa Dolan added: “This new development offers an exciting and positive future for both our clients and carers.”
Sited close to Allerton Hebrew Congregation, the unit will initially provide homes for two MJCC clients.
Langdon service manager Mick Gorton said its role would be advisory. “Staff will be travelling to Liverpool to provide MJCC with general support and advice over how to carry out assessments of clients’ needs,” he explained. “We will also be advising MJCC on how to obtain funding.”
Treasurer Edward Mott-Cowan reported that MJCC continued to provide advice and support to those affected by the economic downturn. Relief grants totalling just over £10,000 had been paid to community members during the year.
Mr Mott-Cowan was elected president with Richard Lewis as vice-president and treasurer and Lorna Baygot as secretary.
