Liverpool actress plans all-female Joseph

articlemain

A young actress who appears in the latest Harry Potter movie is fronting a Liverpool Jewish theatre project.

Gemma Kayla, who plays a senior Hogwarts student in the film, wants to create a community production of the musical Joseph with a difference - the cast will be all-female. Liverpool Jews are now being asked to audition for parts in the modified version, which will have the internet and Israeli politics as themes.

It is being organised in conjunction with Allerton Hebrew Congregation and Liverpool's Jewish activities co-ordinator.

Ms Kayla, a 24-year-old performing arts graduate, said the all-female cast was in response to a request by the synagogue for a production suitable for more observant audiences

"The plan is to take the musical and turn it into something no one has ever seen before. The audience are probably bored of seeing the same thing they can go to the West End to see. The whole point is to start a new theatre group and we will need a cast of up to 50."

It is set to be performed in the summer at Liverpool's King David High School as a final use of the current building, which is being redeveloped.
