The Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue in Leeds has acquired a second food store, Myers Famous Kosherie, which will trade as the Moortown Deli.
BHH bought the assets and goodwill of the deli, which had been trading under a Company Voluntary Arrangement, allowing a business with debt problems to reach a voluntary agreement with creditors.
A shul spokesman said that, without its intervention, the deli might have closed. In common with its Street Lane Bakery, opened in 2014, the business will be run as a social enterprise, with any profits ploughed back into BHH. "Social enterprise is definitely the way forward," he said, adding that the bakery is in line to make a profit this year.
The spokesman was confident the new management team would transform the deli's fortunes. "The turnover is there. It is about managing the cost base in a suitable manner. We will be broadening the range, offering home delivery all the year round and refurbishing the building." Items from the bakery would also be available and the new management intended to add a fresh deli counter.
