The Leeds Jewish Welfare Board president says the charity's staff have "hearts in their mouths" as they wait to discover the fallout from the government spending cuts.
Edward Ziff believes it will be a month before the ramifications of the spending review will translate into funding cutbacks by Leeds and Harrogate local authorities, which partly fund the welfare board. "We are having a number of reviews on various projects they finance."
He did not expect "to get away scot-free" on any of them. "We are going to have to charge more for our services which are privately financed and look more closely at those who can afford to pay for these things."
For example, the charge to users could rise for the welfare board's hot meals service, which costs over £200,000 annually.
The charity had an expenditure of £645,000 last year. It is expecting to announce a 50 per cent reduction in its £40,000 operating deficit at its AGM in a fortnight - "from an income and operation perspective we've had quite a good year up to now."
