A visit to the Hendon offices of special needs charity Kisharon and its adjoining adult day centre gave 60 JFS students a chance to interact with people with learning difficulties.
Taking part through the year nine Hand in Hand volunteering programme, students were welcomed by Kisharon chief executive Dr Beverley Jacobson, who explained that the charity was set up because children with special needs were not being adequately catered for in mainstream education.
They watched a film about Kisharon projects, such as its Tuffkid integrated nursery, day school and employment programme, before joining residents and day centre members for activities including bicycle maintenance, gardening, music, arts and crafts.
Kisharon runs Bus Stop Bikes, a bicycle sales and repairs shop in Hendon and staff members, including those with learning difficulties, were on hand to show students how to service bikes. "This is brilliant," said pupil Jack Rabin. "I never knew how to mend a wheel."
JFS head Jonathan Miller said the Hand in Hand programme "is an immensely important project which allows 300 students to engage in social action. Welcoming service users from Kisharon and other partner organisations to JFS is always a highlight of our year."
