JBD launches pioneering advisory service

articlemain

A ground-breaking advisory service for those with physical disability, memory issues or visual impairment has been launched by Jewish Blind & Disabled.

Available on the JBD website, Empowering Ability was set up "to offer information and support to enable people to live independently", explained chief executive, Hazel Kaye. She expected the service to be used by both those with disability and their relatives.

Ms Kaye said JBD received a number of phone inquiries for advice. "People often don't know what questions to ask."

When looking at existing information resources, she had been surprised "that there was nothing culturally specific and all-embracing for Jews.

"As a charity synonymous with living independently, we felt it was right we did this to support those newly diagnosed, or with a deteriorating condition."

Users can compile self-assessment reports, with signposting to relevant organisations

The service was road-tested by JBD staff, tenants and their family members prior to a soft launch this month.

Within the three information categories - living arrangements, health and well-being, and daily activities - are elements covering mobility, memory and mood, medication management, shopping, bathing, household chores, help in emergencies, benefits and grants and caring for a loved one.

Users can compile self-assessment reports, with signposting to relevant organisations, including the full spectrum of Jewish welfare charities.

"This is not about pointing people to come and live with us," Ms Kaye stressed. "It may just help someone who thinks: 'I'm OK but what do I do in an emergency?'"

It was also intended as a nationwide resource. "Someone in Glasgow will get as much out of it as someone in London."

JBD has applied for grants to meet the running costs of Empowering Ability, estimated at just over £10,000 annually.
