A Kingston Liberal Synagogue member has performed swimmingly in the Invictus Games in Orlando for injured service personnel, taking bronze in the 50 metres backstroke.
Sue Warner said her success in the multi-sport event created by Prince Harry had been "a moment to cherish. I just couldn't believe it. Everyone was cheering so loudly and I had to pinch myself that it was for me."
Ms Warner suffered multiple fractures in an accident in 2009 on service with the Royal Navy as a senior nursing officer. It took time for her to graduate from a wheelchair to crutches.
She has a passion for swimming and her participation in over-55 events at the Games followed a training programme which helped her build muscle strength and general fitness.
Rabbi Danny Rich, Kingston's emeritus minister and Liberal Judaism chief executive, said Ms Warner's achievement was inspirational. "Injured whilst serving her country overseas, she has overcame pain and comfort by sheer determination and a sprinkling of good humour."
She has been a KLS choir member during a long association with the shul.
