Hull care facility spreads its net for residents

articlemain

Hull's Jewish care home is hoping to attract new residents from neighbouring communities whose residential facilities are over-subscribed.

The committee at Menorah House is looking further afield to help fill its rooms, while assisting those unable to access kosher homes in other cities.

Ranked excellent at its last key unannounced inspection, the home has 24 flats, all with en-suite facilities and sitting rooms.

Harold Flasher, chairman of Menorah House's building committee, said the move was intended to help the home weather the recession.

"The Hull community has been fantastic over the years but there comes a time, especially in this economic climate, when you have to look at things differently."

The move is seen as a means to weather the recession

Demand for rooms at kosher care homes such as Leeds' Donisthorpe Hall and Manchester's Heathlands Village remains high. Donisthorpe has increased its capacity but its waiting list still exceeds 60.

"We have 18 residents at the moment which is just break-even point for us," Mr Flasher said. "We are not dipping into our reserves because we have the finances on a stable footing.

"But we have to have a certain number of rooms occupied to ensure our fantastic nursing staff, kitchens and other facilities can operate at their full potential."

The home was close enough to Leeds or Manchester "for people to bring a relative for a week or two of respite care, or if, unfortunately, they have had an accident.

"People could come for any length of time and at any point. We can even arrange the transport."

Menorah House has large dining and lounge areas and residents are encouraged to make the most of entertainment options and activities including physiotherapy sessions.
