Emergency service Hatzola has already raised more than £23,000 towards an ambulance to replace the one written off in a crash on March 18.

The accident happened in Stamford Hill as volunteers were driving to assist someone in "critical need of medical attention". The ambulance - one of Hatzola's three - was nine years old and had been used for 10,000 emergency calls and so the charity expected only "a minimum sum" from the insurers. A new ambulance costs £120,000.

Donors have included those helped by Hatzola. For example, "Boruch G", who contributed £1,800, cited an "immense amount of gratitude" towards the service. "Truly inspirational. Thank you for saving my life," he wrote. Hatzola pointed out that a swift response was key to its effectiveness. "We cannot afford to leave the community without this ambulance. We [want to be] adequately equipped to efficiently respond to the high volume of calls that we receive."
