Two 40ft trailers will deliver urgent supplies to needy Jews in Belarus and Moldova as a result of the £28,500 raised from World Jewish Relief’s golf day at Hartsbourne Country Club, Bushey.
The 96 competitors were supporting WJR’s Gifts in Kind programme, which has sent over £17 million of humanitarian aid abroad in the last five years. Goods such as clothes, shoes, bedding, toys and essential toiletries are donated by individuals and communities across the UK. Contributions include new stock from manufacturers and distributors.
However, transport costs have soared and WJR is trying to ensure that financial considerations do not limit the number of shipments leaving its Neasden warehouse.
The golf day, now in its second year, supports the transport budget.
WJR chief executive Paul Anticoni told the golfers that their generosity had helped to ensure “that critical assistance can be sent to those who need it most. There are still tens of thousands of Jewish families living in conditions reminiscent of the 19th century who are depending on us. We have the choice to give. They may not have the choice to survive.”
