Golders Green care home staff to get wage rise after long-running dispute

Union for Sage staff says it is a 'victory for pandemic heroes'. Management says rise is due to stronger finances

The union representing the majority of staff at the Sage care home in Golders Green is hailing an imminent pay rise as “a victory for pandemic heroes”.

For over a year, the United Voices of the World union has been in dispute with management over pay, with strike action taken in support of their claim.

The union alleges that management had “ignored all attempts by UVW to engage in meaningful, good faith negotiations”.

Staff have now been told that from next month, no one will receive less than the London Living Wage (£10.85 an hour). According to the union, some workers are currently on an hourly rate of £8.91.

However, Sage maintains that the wage rise was not a result of the union’s actions but a consequence of an increase in admissions and a “stronger financial position”.

It accused the UVW of seeking to “disunite” staff, forcing the “small charity” to spend time and resources “addressing UVW’s actions rather than focusing on the running of the home.

“Despite this, we remain committed to providing the best possible care for our residents and want to thank all our staff for their continued hard work and dedication to the home.”
