Finchley Reform Synagogue has appointed a director of spiritual development to find “alternative means for people to grapple with their spiritual journeys”.

In the new role, Rabbi Howard Cooper will conduct a Shabbat morning service once a month, play a part in festival services and contribute to the shul’s adult education activities.

Another new face at FRS will be Zöe Jacobs, who graduates in the summer from the cantorial programme at the Hebrew Union College in New York. She will be involved in musical and educational activities and be virtually full-time from September, also assisting the Movement for Reform Judaism.

The shul still hopes to appoint a director of education with responsibilities including the creation of a new style of religion school.

Welcoming the appointments, the shul’s Rabbi Miriam Berger said they would put FRS “at the cutting edge of the Reform movement. We will have a team which can deal with the day-to-day requirements of a growing community.”
