There were fringe benefits for Edinburgh Jewry as 300 people turned out for the annual Edinburgh Festival open day at the local Hebrew congregation's Salisbury Road premises.

They enjoyed performances from festival stars from Israel, Canada and New Zealand.

American singer-songwriter Dean Friedman dropped by unexpectedly to play his best-known songs - Lucky Stars and Lydia.

Daniel Cainer had the audience roaring with laughter at an extract from his Jewish Chronicles show.

Equally mirth-inducing was a snippet of comedian Bennett Arron's "Jewelsh" routine about about being Jewish and Welsh.

Also featured was congregant and event organiser David Neville's own festival production, Kaddish for Pinter.

"It was wonderful to have such a mix of talent and energy in our shul hall - and for the eighth year running," Mr Neville said.

Audience numbers were swelled by a coach-load of Glasgow Jewish community members and many non-Jewish locals, who also enjoyed tours of the synagogue led by Rabbi David Rose and David Goldberg.
