Escaping Prague was ‘humdrum’

articlemain

One of Nicky's Children has recalled her escape from pre-war Czechoslovakia on the Kinderstransport.

But Lilly Lewy, now 84, said her experience had been "humdrum" in comparison to other children rescued by Sir Nicholas Winton.

She was seven-and-a-half when she fled Prague in May 1939. Mrs Lewy told her story this week after seeing our appeal to find Nicky's Children - some of the 669 youngsters evacuated to Britain by Sir Nicholas from the Nazi-occupied country.

"My principal memory is of the telegraph wires and of the light, presumably moon-light, reflected in the drainage ditches on the side," she said as she recalled the journey.

"It was the first time I'd been on a train at night. I can't remember anything about the other children on the train, except that one girl was put in charge of a very young child."

Mrs Lewy, of Colindale, north London, never subsequently met Sir Nicholas, and was unaware of her connection to him until she watched the special edition of the BBC's That's Life programme in 1988 in which he was reunited with dozens of the children he saved.

She said: "I never knew it at the time because I didn't know who was making the arrangements or anything else.

"Sir Nicholas did a marvellous thing because he was the only one who had the energy to start this, and to find people to help. Many other people also took part, and deserve similar tributes."

Mrs Lewy said she felt her own story was "rather humdrum". After arriving in Britain she worked as a bank clerk, married in 1956 and started a family.

● Many more of Nicky's Children are still out there. Ahead of next month's Holocaust Memorial Day the JC would like to contact them.

In the week of HMD, we will then bring That's Life up to date - with the most comprehensive listing of "Nicky's Children" so far.
