Edwin Shuker, who stepped down as a vice-president of the Board of Deputies at the end of the last triennial in May, is planning a comeback with the organisation.
He will be one of the candidates to replace Gary Mond, who resigned suddenly as senior vice-president of the Board last week.
The Iraqi-born Mr Shuker was the first honorary officer of the organisation from a Mizrahi Jewish background when he was elected as a vice-president in 2018.
Mr Shuker, who chaired the communities and education division during his office, said, "Unexpectedly a second opportunity to lead the communities and education division has materialised with many colleagues from across the Board urging me to step in and bring much needed stability and harmony."
The Board has already appointed David Mendoza-Wolfson, chair of the international division, as senior vice-president to replace Mr Mond. Amanda Bowman, chair of the defence division, is the other VP.
The election for the vacant vice-presidency is due to be held next month.
