Ealing promoting relative values at 90

articlemain

Among the 200 guests at Ealing Synagogue’s 90th anniversary dinner were people with links to the shul’s earliest days.

Jerrold Assersohn’s late father David was one of the founder members of the congregation in 1919. Also present were Evelyn Shindler, daughter of Max Kanal, the other founder member, and Marion Crystal, whose parents were the first couple to be married at the synagogue in 1921.

After addressing the gathering, Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks went on a walkabout to meet and greet as many fellow diners as possible, He made a presentation to Neil Shestopal, in recognition of his loyal and dedicated service. Mr Shestopal has been a warden in addition to his role as the shul’s honorary chazan since 1977.

Another speaker was educationist Clive Lawton, who was born and raised in Ealing and whose late father Clifford served the community as warden.

Although not a fundraising event, an £8,000 profit will, said an Ealing officer, “go towards maintaining our shul at least until we reach our centenary”.
