A prominent Irish Jewish personality has died on his way to synagogue.

Jack Sheena, 72, was a council member of Dublin Hebrew Congregation and a volunteer at the Bloomfield care home. Police are investigating how his car veered from a road in Dublin on Wednesday of last week.

Israel's envoy to Ireland, Boaz Modai, was among 300 people at the funeral, where Rabbi Zalman Lent said Mr Sheena's legacy was one of unassuming generosity. "His key trait was offering to help, which is why so many people knew him. It's a great loss to the Dublin Jewish community."

He is survived by three brothers, a sister and two sons.
