A Woman rescued as a child from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia by Sir Nicholas Winton was among speakers at the Manchester launch of the theme for next year’s Holocaust Memorial Day, Don’t Stand By.
Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines said that the title encapsulated the efforts of people like Sir Nicholas, who did not stand by but took action.
Announcing the theme, Holocaust Memorial Trust chief executive, Olivia Marks-Woldman, said the 2016 commemoration would educate on “how bystanders created cultures in which the Holocaust and subsequent genocides were able to take place, and about the rescuers and resisters who challenged this. HMD 2016 will encourage people to consider the ways in which they can choose not to be bystanders today, both to antisemitism, racism and hate crime.” The reception was attended by survivors and HMD event organisers and youth champions.
