David Mitchell and Angus Deayton are bringing comic relief to Mitzvah Day, the nationwide good deed programme on November 15. Mitchell and Deayton will be judging competitions for the best projects on the day, which is expected to attract 15,000 volunteers.

Mitchell said that “time can be a much more generous gift than money. Just ask someone rich, busy and old which they value most.”

Mitzvah Day coincides with the start of the UK’s first National Interfaith Week and organisers have been drumming up projects involving other faiths. In Manchester, for example, Habonim Dror members will work with Muslim youth groups on an arts and crafts initiative. Talks are also being held with Anglican, Catholic and Hindu groups about potential collaborations.

Event founder and director Laura Marks said the point of Mitzvah Day was Jews “showing their commitment to playing a full role in the community.

“Where practical, therefore, we are urging our partners to work with others so that all faith communities can come together with a common goal.”
