London Mayor Boris Johnson has given the green light for a major Chanucah celebration in Trafalgar Square.

Chanucah in the Square will be held at five o'clock on December 22, the second night of the festival, when the mayor will lead a civic lighting ceremony.

The menorah - a gift to Ken Livingstone's administration and claimed to be the biggest in the world - will be placed next to the traditional Christmas tree donated by Norway. Mr Johnson will be raised in a cherry-picker to light the menorah. The event is supported by the London Jewish Forum, the Jewish Community Centre and the Lubavitch Foundation.
