Jewish Care hopes that two emotive accounts of people it has helped will encourage contributions to its Chanucah appeal, which has a £30,000 target.

A pack sent to potential donors features the story of Jack and Joan, who are both in their nineties. When Joan was diagnosed with dementia a year ago, Jack was unable to cope and turned to Jewish Care for help. They are now being looked after at the charity’s Kay Court home in Hampstead.

The second story is about Gila, who was hospitalised as a teenager with mental health problems but has turned her life around with Jewish Care’s support.

In an accompanying letter, Jewish Care chief executive Simon Morris writes that not everyone can enjoy Chauncah without charitable support and that many of Jewish Care’s services receive no government or local authority funding. “For people like Jack and Joan, we play a crucial role in maintaining their well-being in a comfortable and heimishe environment.”
