Rabbi Yossi Jacobs's contribution to the renaissance of Birmingham's Singers Hill Synagogue was highlighted on Sunday with a celebration of his 10th anniversary at the shul.

Just 25 when appointed chief minister, the rabbi and his wife, Rachel, had helped to increase activity "in all areas of our congregation", Singers Hill president Keith Rowe told more than 300 guests.

"They both have a wonderful aptitude for fitting in with and understanding the needs of all age groups and areas of the community. The social and religious activities they have introduced fully reflect this."

Rabbi Jacobs complimented the shul's lay leadership for overlooking the couple's youthfulness when recruiting them, instead recognising their enthusiasm. "During these 10 years we have enjoyed working to make our shul the heart and soul of Midlands Jewry." He was presented with a portrait of himself, which will be hung in the council chamber of the Grade II-listed building.

Other speakers included the Bishop of Birmingham, Rt Rev David Urquhart, who praised the rabbi's interfaith work. The Neimah Singers provided musical entertainment.
